Mirage

Tides of sand sweep the shore
on moist, life-bearing soil.
I greet the herbaceous scene
with an enthusiastic swish of tail.

The humid air is dense and hydrating.
I step, shaky, into the depths of a calm oasis
and wash away the bloody,
silicate encrusted miles.

Waking, from a frenetic night-terror
into blissful daydream, serene.
I'm amazed at my ability
to endure asphyxiation,
subsisting on nothing but
dry, stagnating air.

I emerge soaked and rejuvenated
the water ripples
reflecting sweet Selene,
whom I freely give my mourning song
letting the melody carry my merciless memories
galaxies away.

But
still haunting me,
those eyes were
veiled beneath ashen resentment,
and burned brightly with an untameable fire
like the forest I once fled.
